Top tips on memorising on the Qur’an this Ramadan and beyond.

Alhamdulillah almost 12 years ago I was blessed to have completed my memorisation (hifdh) of the Qur’an and here are a few things that helped me…

1) My personal technique was just to read the portion I wanted to memorise repetitively the night before (not attempting to memorise), then wake up in the morning to memorise it. The key here is first you familiarise yourself with it, then you memorise. Don’t rush the hifdh part.

2) The best time for memorisation is the morning time. By the afternoon/evening, your brain is fried and you’re mentally & physically tired. Plus our Prophet PBUH made du’a to Allah to bless the early mornings of his ummah (Abu Dawud) so you can’t miss the barakah!

[09:20, 12/31/2022] Dad: Here’s a short thread on a few misconceptions about memorising the Qur’an…

❌ I can’t memorise the entire Qur’an: Even then, why is that stopping you from memorising as much as you can? Why recite the same surahs in your prayers when you can memorise a few more? Even if you can’t recite, listen to a recitation repeatedly and eventually you’ll memorise!

❌ I don’t have enough time for this: There’s always time if you seek it! Wake up earlier, go to sleep later, consume less social media, search for the times of barakah (divine blessings) and you will surely have more time on your hands.

❌ I don’t have a good memory: It’s not always about memory – it’s about dedication and consistency! Allah has promised us: “We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for memorisation…” [54:22] so will you not then give it a go?

❌ It takes too long to memorise: Even if it does, the Qur’an is a lifelong journey! Whether it’s perfecting the art of recitation, memorising it, understanding its meaning, or delving into its sciences – these all take time; time which is worth investing!

❌ I’m too old to memorise the Qur’an: Our Prophet PBUH received revelation at the age of 40 and there were many Companions who were memorising the Qur’an after the age of 50/60. In my own class I had an uncle in his 40s studying with us!
