Virtue of fasting & reading taraweeh.

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan bin Awf رضي الله عنه reports that Nabi ﷺ said,

“Indeed Allah Ta’ala has ordained the fast of Ramadhaan upon you and I have prescribed for you standing during its nights (in Taraaweeh Salaah).

Whosoever fasts during the days and stands up during the night in Taraaweeh Salaah with true faith and hope of reward from Allah Ta’ala, he will be cleansed from all his sins like the day his mother gave birth to him.”

(Nasa’i 2210)

Abu Hurayrah رضى الله عنه narrates:

Indeed the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“Whoever spends a pair in the cause of Allah will be called from the doors of Al-Jannah (Paradise): ‘O slave of Allah! This (door) is better for you.’ So whoever was from the people of Salaah (i.e. regular or consistent in Salaah), he will be called from the door of Salaah. And whoever was from the people of Jihaad (i.e. Those who regularly or consistently struggled against their own desires / bad habits, or those who physically battled the enemy in the cause of Allah), will be called from the door of Jihaad. And whoever was from the people of fasting (i.e. regular or consistent in fasting), will be called from the door of Al-Rayyaan. And whoever was from the people of charity (i.e. regular or consistent in charity), will be called from the door of charity.”

(Sayyidinaa) Abu Bakr (As-Siddeeq- The Prophet’s close friend, father in law and first Khalifah of Islam) رضى الله عنه said: “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Whoever is called from those doors have no (further) need (i.e. because whichever door he enters, he will be in Paradise). But is there anyone who will be called from those doors altogether?” He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Yes. And I hope that you will be from them.”

NB: The words ‘a pair’ refers to two horses, two slaves, two camels, or a dirham and a dinaar.

Also the words ‘May my father and mother be sacrificed for you’ was used as a statement of gratitude / appreciation / love among the Arabs, and not meant literally.

Forgetfulness is forgiven

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reports that Rasúlullãh ﷺ said,

“Whosoever forgets he is fasting and thus eats and drinks, he should complete his fast. For surely, Allah fed him and made him drink.” [Bukhari]

Note: whilst to eat forgetfully doesn’t break the fast, to eat accidentally (while fully conscious of fasting) does break it.
