Abu Hurayrah رضى الله عنه narrates:
Indeed the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“Fast (the month of Ramadhaan) by seeing it (i.e. the crescent of the new moon) and end fasting (the month of Ramadhaan) by seeing it. And if it (i.e. the crescent of the new moon of Ramadhaan) is concealed from you (because of clouds). Then complete the number of Sha’baan (as) thirty (days).”
A narration of Imaam Muslim رحمه الله تعالى states:
“If it is cloudy over you (and you therefore do not see the new moon for Eid) then fast thirty days (of Ramadhaan).”

Special gate in heaven for those who fast.
Sayyiduna Sahl ibn Sa’d رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“Verily, there is a gate in Paradise called al-Rayyan, through which only those who fasted will enter on the Day of Resurrection.
No one else will enter it along with them. It will be said: Where are those who fasted? They will stand and no one will enter it along with them. When they enter it, it will be closed and no one else will go through it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1896)

Joys of fasting
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reports that Rasúlullãh ﷺ said,
“The fasting person has two occasions of joy: he is glad [in this world] when opening his fast, and he will be glad, having fasted, when he meets his Lord [in the Hereafter].” [Bukhari]
